FUE vs FUT: Which Hair Transplant Method Is Right for You
The two main extraction methods have different trade-offs. Here is what each does better.
FUE and FUT both move hair from the back of your head to the front. The difference is how they extract the grafts.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
A strip of scalp is surgically removed from the donor area. The strip is dissected into individual grafts under a microscope, then implanted.
Pros:
- Lower transection rate (less graft damage)
- Faster procedure (4-6 hours vs 6-10 for FUE)
- Lower cost per graft
- Good for large sessions (3000+ grafts)
Cons:
- Linear scar on the back of the head
- Longer recovery (2 weeks for scar healing)
- Cannot wear very short haircuts
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
Individual follicular units are extracted one by one using a punch tool. Each extraction leaves a tiny dot scar.
Pros:
- No linear scar
- Can wear short haircuts
- Faster recovery (5-7 days)
- Less post-op discomfort
Cons:
- Higher cost per graft
- Longer procedure time
- Higher transection rate if surgeon is inexperienced
